Meet the Garage Leader

Norman Hunt
Garage Leader
My martial arts journey started young. I trained in TKD, Aikido, and several other disciplines, competed seriously, and found real success. But something always felt incomplete. I wanted to understand grappling — not as a sport supplement, but because statistically, the ground is where real-world confrontations end up. Knowing how to stand and strike is only part of the picture.
The harder problem was finding the right environment to learn it. A lot of martial arts schools — and I say this respectfully, having trained in several — operate with a win mindset. You're taught the technique, not the reasoning. You're expected to keep up, not to understand. In traditional BJJ gyms, I often felt thrown to the wolves: unfamiliar positions, training partners who prioritized tapping you out over helping you learn, and little space to ask why.
That changed in 2023 when I walked into a Gracie University Certified Training Center for the first time. It was exactly what I'd been looking for. The curriculum was structured and progressive. Instructors encouraged questions. The culture celebrated understanding, not just winning. After more than a year of consistent training, I earned my Gracie Combatives® belt — but what I'll remember more is the people. Students became training partners. Training partners became close friends. Getting submitted stopped feeling like failure and started feeling like opportunity.
What deepened that experience further was watching my kids go through it too. Two of them trained in the Gracie Bullyproof® program, and what struck me wasn't just that they were learning techniques — it's that they were learning why. Bullyproof® teaches kids to find their voice, set healthy boundaries without arrogance, and approach conflict with the mindset of avoiding it at all costs — except when their own safety demands otherwise. Parents aren't just spectators there; they're encouraged to get on the mats alongside their kids. The bonds that build when a family trains together are different from anything else I've experienced. Conversations open up. Trust deepens. It's hard to fully explain until you've felt it.
I moved to Gainesville without a GU CTC nearby. My long-term goal is to open one. In the meantime, I built the Garage Gators — a structured, welcoming training space in my garage for people in the greater Gainesville area who want to learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with curiosity, patience, and genuine care for each other's growth.
If you've never trained before, you belong here. If you've trained elsewhere and felt like something was missing, you probably belong here too. And if you're a parent who wants to train with your kids rather than just drop them off — this space was built with you in mind.
Combatives® Belt Test
Earning your Gracie Combatives® belt is the first major milestone in the GU curriculum. The videos below are from my own Combatives® test — they are not perfect, and that is the whole point. This journey is about growth, persistence, and understanding the techniques deeply enough to apply them under pressure. Whatever your goals on the mat, this is what the work looks like.

About The Garage Gators
The Garage Gators is a free, community-driven Gracie Garage based in Gainesville, Florida. We follow the official Gracie University curriculum — the structured, self-defense-first system of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu developed by the Gracie family and delivered through Gracie University's online platform.
Our group is open to adults, teens (13+), and kids. Adults and teens train in Gracie Combatives® and Master Cycle®, progressing through the official 36-technique Combatives® curriculum before advancing to Master Cycle®. Kids ages 7–12 train in the Gracie Bullyproof® Jr. Combatives® program, which builds confidence and non-violent self-defense skills through age-appropriate Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instruction.
A Gracie Garage is an informal community training group, not a commercial school. There are no membership fees, no dues, and no contracts — ever. We are not a Gracie University Certified Training Center, but we are aligned with and supportive of the Gracie University mission to make authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone.
Training sessions are for drilling and refinement — not for watching videos. Participants are expected to review the relevant Gracie University lesson on their own time before arriving. A free GU account gives you access to the lessons you need. That preparation is what makes every training session valuable for everyone on the mat.
This app is built and maintained by the Garage Leader to help members track attendance, view the weekly schedule, manage training cards, and stay connected with the group. It is purpose-built for our community and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Gracie University.
Whether you are brand new to martial arts or a seasoned practitioner looking for a structured training partner group, you are welcome on the mat. OSS!
Training Guidelines & Rules
Respect & Safety Come First
We prioritize the safety and respect of all participants. This is a non-competitive, self-defense focused training environment. Leave your ego at the door and come ready to learn.
Preparation is Required
Training sessions are for drilling and refinement. You are expected to review the relevant Gracie University lesson video on your own time before arriving. This preparation ensures the most valuable training experience for everyone on the mat.
Liability & Legal Documents
All participants must have a signed liability waiver on file. Parents of minors must sign consent forms. The Garage Leader will provide and guide you through these documents — they are a one-time requirement.
Dress Code
Bring a GJJ Gi (uniform) and train barefoot. Nails should be trimmed. Jewelry is not permitted on the mats for safety reasons.
Communicate & Tap Early
Always communicate verbally if something doesn't feel right. Tap early and tap often — there is zero shame in tapping. The person tapping is actually taking care of their training partner.
No Egos, No Drama
We are a community. How you treat your training partners — before, during, and after training — matters. Be the person you want training next to you.
Questions about rules or expectations? Contact us anytime. We're here to help you succeed on and off the mats.
