I Watched My Kids Go Through Gracie Bullyproof®. Here's What Actually Surprised Me.

Published May 2026 · 6 min read

When I first heard about the Gracie Bullyproof® program, I assumed it was a kids' self-defense class. Techniques, drills, maybe some confidence-building exercises. I thought I understood what I was signing my kids up for.

I was partially right. But what struck me most had almost nothing to do with the physical techniques.

What Bullyproof® actually teaches kids — and I mean this — is how to think about conflict. Not just how to escape a headlock, but why avoiding a fight is always the first objective. Not just how to set a boundary, but how to do it without arrogance or aggression. The program teaches children to find their voice in uncomfortable situations and to understand that walking away isn't weakness — it's usually the right call.

The Part Nobody Tells Parents

In the Gracie Bullyproof® program, parents aren't spectators. They're encouraged to get on the mat alongside their kids. That changes everything. When you're drilling a technique with your child — when they're teaching you something they just learned — a different kind of conversation opens up. Trust deepens in a way that's hard to manufacture anywhere else.

The bonds that build when a family trains together are different from anything else I've experienced as a parent. I wasn't expecting that going in.

What This Looks Like at the Garage Gators

At the Garage Gators, kids ages 7 through 12 train in the official Gracie University Jr. Combatives® program. Sessions are structured, age-appropriate, and grounded in the same self-defense-first philosophy that drives everything else we do. There are no trophies for tapping someone out faster. Progress is about understanding — not how quickly a child advances to the next belt.

If you're a parent who wants to be present in your child's development on the mat rather than watching from a chair, this program was built with you in mind. And like everything at the Garage Gators, training is free for as long as we operate as a Gracie Garage.
